about your last response...

As for your instruments... that's not really all that important. Something that I learned fairly recently is that you want all your instruments to be fairly evenly spaced out on the frequency spectrum. For example, in this song you have a lot of high-pitched stuff happening. Just by making one of them an octave or two lower would make this song a lot better. Also, make an actual bass part. Just having an 808 as the bass will work for a short time, but for the girth of your song you need a punchy, low bassline.

I disagree with the previous reviewer... I do not believe that the arp thingy makes anything clash. It fits perfectly, but is completely unexpected. After all that time, the listener is expecting something happy. If you don't want this song to be happy, add a simple something to the beginning that gives the feel you want.

I hope this helps a little. Just listen to a lot of music here on newgrounds that you want to sound like and just sit and analyze it... and see if you can figure out how to sound more like it.

Wow,

Thank you very much for FINALLY giving me the detailed and intricate review that i've been looking for! Your absolutely right about everything you said. And yes i've actually been finding myself studying great music a lot and understanding it. I guess a lot of my repetition (that everyone hates) comes from my affinity for Daft Punk. I'm still taking baby steps as far as music production but I learn at a rapid pace so as for my music, maturity will come!

Thank you so much again for writing this!!!

Haha...

Ok, good piano. But that pitch correcter is really getting to me. I mean, the song sounds very Ben Folds. But all these people think you're this great singer but technically, no way. Cheer up though, I gave you a nine :P

AlexSandford responds:

For your information I have seven years of technical training. I've been in international award winning choirs, often featured as a soloist. I bet my ass I could sing circles around you any day of the week. As it happens I was incredibly sick the day we recorded this, and it was the last day in the studio so, being as my mics don't hold a candle to the studio's, I had to make due with what came and yes, on quite a few phrases I used the pitch corrector. If you want to hear some better genuine un-autotuned vocals here "When the Wind Blows" or "Alone". Sorry to get all hot and bothered, but check your facts before you critique my singing.

Nice progression

I liked your movement in this song. I agree, it's short, but that's perfectly OK. better to make something short that sounds great than try to make something long that doesn't sound so good. Having said that, I wish you used Reason so I could add more to it, do a little collab :)

EpicMastermind responds:

wow, someone likes this song! :) Yes I want reason really badly but I can't afford it.

Woah!

This is cool. It's really weird and trippy but that makes it good. I couldn't help but notice the default drum loop though. I haven't use FL in ages and I still recognized it.

Other than that, this is definately Ambient, and I think you should make more.

EpicMastermind responds:

thanks! :) I will make more of these :D

I think...

You're peaking out. I'm getting a lot of distortion on my headphones and I don't think it's intentional. Use a normalizer and possibly some compression too. Or just turn your strings down.

I gave a 9 and not lower because the problem with this song is easily fixed. And when fixed, this song would be ace!

EpicMastermind responds:

You are right I am just too incompetent to understand how to use normalizers and compressors lol xD

Very good!

Your menu will be pimped out with this music. It's got that sort of simple anxiety feeling to it.

The only thing that caught my attention: The guitar-like pluck instrument was off-beat sometimes. Did you record that on a midi device? If you, you might want to consider quantizing it or programming it by hand to make sure it's top-notch quality for your game.

Other than that, great song! Almost reminds me of Final Fantasy... VII I think.

EpicMastermind responds:

I used FL Studio 7, and yeah, unfortunately, it kind of exhibits some latency during certain stanzas.

Once again...

There's something about the instruments that you use that makes it sound so good. I don't have a very good ear for samples and my headphones and speakers are, not cheap, but not good either. But nothing you have used has the slightest imperfections. I absolutely love your effects. The preset effects on Reason aren't very good, and to make a custom one just takes too much time, especially since I'm teaching myself everything haha. I'm going to try my luck at it and see if I can borrow some of your techniques. I think I have an idea of what makes it sound so fresh and I want to give it a try.

SuperGoodSound responds:

hey, thanks again for the "awesome" review (pun intended, lol - actually, that is kinda funny...).

I've found that even though certain presets may not sound good by themselves...if you find the right application for it - they somehow magically seem to work. Now, it's true that there are simply some banks of sound (viz. say Nexus) that just have such superb programming that every single preset is inspiring and almost an instant song right there, but very often - if you can "feel" it through - there seems to always be this way to accomplish a satisfying piece of music from seemingly harmless little sounds...

Like - this song for instance was built completely from freeware instruments and fx. Nothing at all that I had to pay for. I wish I could really understand how the deeper parts of the creation process work so I could at least explain myself decently, but it just seems to nebulous for me to put into real words.

Nice

This song affected me somehow. I thought at first it sounded weird but then it made sense... I really like this song. Good work!

Like darthy said, good chill music.

Zani responds:

Thanks for review,and vote
Im glad ;)

My comments:

Your music writing is obviously very good. You are good at coming up with ideas and your transitions are very good. The only problem I saw was the overwhelming treble. Your main instrument was very boring to listen to. I think this song would be a million times better if you just changed that main instrument. Maybe some synth with low attack. Idk.

Other than that, the song was great!

mikrodizels responds:

k

Message length

Very good.

I personally thought the percussion was a little too loud. But other than that...

Very catchy beat! Nice build-up.

I just wish it was longer!

Sp1r1T responds:

Hehe :P Thanks alot! It was a short project, And I had nothing else to add to it.

PM or Email me if you want custom music for your flash.
